GMO Corn

Animals fed GMO corn, for example, developed problems of their blood (leukemia), blood pressure, kidney, liver (including significant changes kidney weight as well as lesions on the kidney and liver), allergies to infection, increased blood sugar levels, diseases, and yes, even cancer. These are not minor problems, but major changes in the body. These are a toxic reactions to a poison. (Even if the same effect doesn't occur in humans, think of the repercussions of us eating the meat of animals that ate the GMO corn and therefore unhealthy animals!)

Corn and Soy are the top two genetically modified crops and are two of the largest crops. You can find corn and soy in practically every processed food. Chickens and cows eat corn and soy on feedlots (another reason to choose only grassfed meats and organic chicken) so the problem is multiplied in every way. Then there is nature's way of creating crops naturally with cross-pollination and it becomes clear that our entire food line is in jeopardy. The real fear is that at some point, it will be difficult to find any corn and soy that is not genetically modified. When we think of how many products use corn as a base and then the animals that are regularly fed this, we can easily see how this is a huge experiment with our lives and the health of humans everywhere.

Genetic Modification is a scientific process that changes the very nature of a plant. Genes from humans, bacteria, viruses, plants and animals are inserted into the plants. This is the first time that science has been able to cross the species barrier. This allows the companies to control the foods, the farmers, and the food chain itself. Inserting these foreign organisms into corn changes how our body will use it nutritionally (many crops now offer less protein, for example) and creates new allergies and toxins that must be fought off with additional chemicals and drugs.

And to further add insult to this injury, because these Frankensteins can now reproduce, "super weeds" are cropping up that need super strong pesticides! That's even MORE chemicals in our environment and in our food. A vicious cycle, or is it a planned action for profit? The companies who are sponsoring this research and use include pharmaceutical companies like the drug company that owns Monsanto which creates weed killer (and Nutrasweet), and corporations like Phillip Morris which owns Kraft Foods. Kraft uses GMO.

Most corn is now GMO so we have to be careful to choose organic fresh corn. It is one of the top crops that is being genetically modified, along with soy. It is prevalent in processed foods. It's hard to find a processed food without some sort of corn product in it. Because of that, it's important we read labels, know the code words for corn, and only choose those corn derivatives that are organic.

Corn is a grain, not a vegetable.

Corn is high in sugar. One bushel of corn produces enough corn syrup to sweeten 324 cans of soda. That's why it's used to sweeten many processed foods. You will find High Fructose Corn Syrup listed in the ingredients of many products. This is a cheap syrup produced from cornstarch. It is popularly added to foods; manufacturers use this over other sweeteners. It is in virtually every soda, snack (cookies, crackers), candy, frosting, jam, jelly, salad dressing, ice cream, condiment, and fruit juice. You'll see it in most ingredient labels you read, even on things considered "health foods" like cereal bars and energy bars.

Corn Syrup has only been around since the 70s. Before that, sweeteners used were sugar beets and sugar cane or sucrose. HFCS contains 14% fructose. There have been no studies on the long term effects of HFCS. Never before in history have so many people consumed so much fructose. We are walking experiments.

Corn and it's derivatives are a likely source of the obesity and diabetes in America today. Therefore, we are best avoiding corn where we can (and maybe only partaking of it in it's fresh, natural state when organic corn is available.)

In addition, and like peanuts, corn can grow a toxic mold or fungus. Called mycotoxin, this toxin may lead to:

* cancer
* heart disease
* diabetes
* other illness

To live a longer and healthier life, discard all products with ingredients listed as corn or it's derivatives including:

* Baking Powder
* Confectioner’s Sugar
* Corn Oil
* Corn Syrup
* Corn-Fed Animals
* Cornmeal
* Cornstarch
* Dextrin or Dextrine
* Dextrose
* Food Starch
* Fructose
* Fructose And Fructose Syrup
* High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
* Malt
* Malt Extract
* Malt Syrup
* Maltodextrin - made from corn and used in foods for a creamy texture, at a minimum, look for organic in food ingredients
* Monosodium Glutamate
* MSG
* Sorbitol
* Starch
* Xanthan Gum

Corn is also the main staple of feed given to animals because it's cheap and fattens cattle up quickly. This is not the natural food of these animals and changes their nutritional value for our consumption too. Instead, choose meats that live a more normal grazing life.

In Washington, Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa said the flooding has devastated his state's corn crop and may have inflicted up to $1 billion in damage to Iowa's agricultural sector alone. The flooding has forced farm-equipment manufacturer John Deere to idle two plants in Waterloo, he said.
